Want to Write for WomanSpeak?
WomanSpeak targets women who want to read about people's lives and be able to use that information in their own lives. Our mission statement: To inform, inspire, and positively affect the feminine face of success in this Great River Community.
DON'T
Dry information, or a listing of products or services available is not appropriate. Even a beautiful description of a service or product is not suitable for editorial articles.
DO USE PLAIN LANGUAGE
Specific information is good, but highly-specialized information or language is not appropriate. The audience for WomanSpeak covers a wide range of educational levels, ages, abilities, and interests.
DO THINK BENEFITS
Our readers are interested in how information will benefit them. For example, tips about how to save money or time, and stories about how people overcame difficulties are good editorial material. Humor can benefit the reader--it is a good way to connect emotionally.
DO CONSIDER FORMATS
A bulleted list or a step-by-step explanation can be easily understood, and is interesting to read. A narrative format is effective, and questions and answers can be good if they are relevant to general readers. A quiz can be entertaining, and people enjoy finding out more about themselves, in particular. Anecdotes and statistics are engaging; they connect to the reader's personal experiences.
DO INCLUDE PHOTOGRAPHS
Photographs are important in drawing the reader's attention. Permission is required for all photographs, include names and contact numbers. Captions are helpful.
All back issues of WomanSpeak are available for research at the Quincy Public Library in the Illinois Room.
We are very happy to read and review your articles, and may save them for possible use in a later issue if they do not fit into a particular issue. We have a general format: Winter is Bridal, Spring is Country, Summer is Family and Children, and Fall is Holiday. Deadlines are as follows: Winter issue, November 24; Spring issue, February 28; Summer issue, May 29; Fall issue, August 28.
